Camosun College

Camosun College is a two-campus provincial community college that serves southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Its region ex-tends over the traditional territory of 9 Coast Salish tribes (Esquimalt, Lekwammen, Malahaht, Pauquzchin, SC'IANEW, Tsartlip, Tsawout, Tseycum, and T'sou-ke) and one Nuu-chah-nulth tribe(Pacheedaht). Out of a student population of 7000, Camosun College presently serves about 300 First Nations students.

First Nations students can attend one of two Camosun campuses or the Saanich Adult Education Centre, which has an all-Aboriginal student population. First Nations students at Camosun have a number of services and activities available for them. Under the guidance of the community-based First Nations Advisory Board, the First Nations Education Office (which consists of a Coordinator, an Advisor, and a secretary) works to provide educational, financial, and cultural support to First Nations students at the college, and to work with local First Nations and Aboriginal organizations to ensure that programs, services, and learning envi-ronments are relevant to the needs of the students and community.

First Nations students at Camosun work with each other and with the First Nations Education Office to make their college years both fun and productive. Each September everybody participates in a Welcoming Feast for students, First Nations community members, and college personnel. It's a great way to start working together. Throughout the year various gatherings and events take place to provide support and informa-tion to students and to ensure that Camosun College keeps aware of current issues and needs.

The Wilna Thomas Cultural Centre was recently completed. The Centre reflects the four elements of the world(earth, air, fire, and water) and the four elements of humans (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual) and provides a place for students of culture to gather, learn and celebrate. The Centre provides permanent space for cultural events. Camosun College is again offering the succesful First Nations Family Support Worker program(FNFSW).
